Nephrotic Syndrome: Other Way Aside from Biopsy to Check the Problem

Question: Hi! My son has been diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome. After taking predisone for almost a month, the protein count is still high on the urine test result. The doctor advised us to take one more week medication but after one week and the result was the same. She said she would recommend for biopsy to check what is really the problem. Is there any other way that we can check the problem aside from biopsy?

Nephrotic Syndrome: Other Way Aside from Biopsy to Check the ProblemAnswer: Nephrotic Syndrome is a group of symptoms including massive proteinuria, heavy swelling, hypoproteinemia and hyperlipemia. It can be caused by a variety of diseases, such as Minimal Change Disease, Membranous Nephropathy, Membranous Proliferative Glomerulonephritis, FSGS, etc. Kidney biopsy is a way to make sure pathological type of disease. But as to whether biopsy is needed or not and when to do renal biopsy, most patients have deep doubts, after all it is invasive.

When to do renal biopsy?

-The disease develops quickly, such as unexplained kidney failure or other severe symptoms.

-The considering pathological type does not match your clinical manifestations.
