Is It Advisable to Start Steroids with Urine Protein 1150 mg/d for IgA Nephropathy

Question: I am diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy in the year of 2012 August. In last six months my protein level increased in urine. Now my 24 hours urine protein is 1150 mg per day. And also serum creatinine is from 1.1 to 1.4. Is it advisable to start steroids now?

Is It Advisable to Start Steroids with Urine Protein 1150 mg/d for IgA NephropathyAnswer: IgA Nephropathy is a benign kidney disease, which usually develops many years to kidney failure. But now from what you said, your kidney disease is worsening. Protein in urine can cause further damage to your kidneys, so you should take treatment as early as possible to stop protein leakage.

Steroid treatment is helpful for IgA Nephropathy in short-term.

Steroids are potent medicines for IgA Nephropathy patients to block kidney inflammation and decrease the permeability of capillaries to reduce protein leakage. Maybe you can have a try. Besides, you can use some hypotensive drugs such as ACEI or ARBs to lower blood pressure and decrease proteinuria. In short-term, they are helpful for you to control the state of illness. But in long-term, they have many side effects, such as weight gain, abnormal fat deposition and bone disease.

Chinese medicine can be used together with steroid treatment.

Chinese medicine takes effect slowly, which may make you miss the best time for treatment. But when it is used together with western medicine, they can make up respective shortcomings. In Chinese medicine, there is Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy, Medicated Foot Bath, Mai Kang Composition, various medicinal soup and so on. They have been widely used in kidney disease treatment. They can not only counteract the side effects of steroids, but also eliminate protein from urine. Besides, they can repair the damaged kidneys and improve kidney function. And then you can lead a normal life with IgA Nephropathy without worrying about relapse.

It is advisable to start steroids with urine protein 1150 mg/d for IgA Nephropathy. But to achieve a better therapeutic effect, you had better use Chinese medicine together. For more information on IgA Nephropathy treatment, please leave a message below or send emails to igacure@gmail.com.
